I was walking past Cool Discs the other day and noticed in the window among the many posters, the sign advertising bus and ticket packages to concerts. The thing that caught my eye was the amount of tickets for gigs in Belfast!
Time after time ill read about a great band releasing a record and i think to myself 'id love to see them live!' only to find that the only gig they'll play in Northern Ireland is in Belfast. Fair enough we have some nice venues here, the Nerve Centre in paticular has a great reputation for bringing bands here and giving local talent a place to get started.
But surely its time for our city to have a big enough venue for established bands to play in!Im not talking about bringing Beyonce to play the city walls or U2 rocking out in Fort George but bands that at least are in the charts.
We have a reputation as being the city of song and yet week after week we're sending bus loads of people down the road to spend there money in another city. I just hope with all the planning for business and education the council will factor in space for arts and culture, remember all work and no play....

I believe that the owners of the Waterside nightclub on Dukes Street had initial plans to open up a 4000 standing concert hall.
But apparently the red tape in planning has thwarted that opportunity. A shame really since us Derry wans love to complain that we get nothing, only to scupper it by a local businessman
I can't understand why local business's haven't caught on to the idea of holding a Hallowe'en music festival! It would be totally unique an attract more tourists to the city.
People are always complaining about Hallow'en wether its the drinking or the disruption it causes in the city centre- well how about putting a big tent in Prehen playin fields (like One Big Weekend)and inviting a few good bands to play, that leaves the city centre more open to family orientated events.
Im suggesting Smashing Pumpkins as a headline act.
So the millenium forum annouced tickets for a Bryan Adams concert which sold out in 30mins, Bryan is also playing 2 nights in Dublin and Belfast on his tour and these venues have not sold out. Does this not tell us something? People here would love to have more big name acts come to the city so why wont they!? Its taken Bryan Adams almost 10 years to return the here! What a joke!
