I was heartened to read this week that after consultation with key stakeholders in the city the development of our political history is going to form a part of the new Tourism Strategy Document.
This is itself is very important. When first presented with the initial draft of this document at the Guildhall several months ago, all the stakeholder groups present were unanimous in voicing their concerns about this.
Most people were worried that our colourful political history was going to be airbrushed from the document and were very angry that it didn't seem to be included initially.
That said, it is good to see that the consultation process wasn't merely a cosmetic exercise.
There is nothing to fear. The time is right and we must embrace our past.
Visitors to our beautiful city are fascinated by our political history. Many of them, particularly young people, come to the city specifically because of it.
It is no understatement to say that we ignore our political history at our peril.
Our walls are undoubtedly a key attraction. However it is the Bogside especially, the Fountain and the Waterside with their colourful murals that draw in the crowds.
These are areas that have been ravaged over the years by The Troubles and now ironically are the main areas that can get us out of trouble.
These need investment. The Bogside and the Fountain cannot be expected to have to accommodate thousands of tourists walking around their areas, when their neighbourhoods are chronically deprived.
Lighting, green spaces and adequate parking facilities are key. Children need somewhere to play.
They need to be able to play in places that are maintained and kept free from glass and litter.
Teenagers need accommodated. They are the worst allocated for group of all. They need to have a skate park now.
The Bogside, with all its murals would be a perfect place for a skatepark.
