I was at a meeting on Monday about the death of our town centre!!!!!
Great meeting BUT were was the Chamber of Commerce,?? do we not pay them??
One guy ,Peter, said there were only about 10 emptyshops.Does he actually walk around the centre?Did he close his shop because he was so busy he could not cope?
One of the political partys there have sent out leaflets encouraging support for Tesco on Buncrana Rd why were they there?
Well done Traders ,get behind Jim Roddy we need only ONE person speaking for us.
Well done Martin for starting this and well done (for once ) Derry Journal.

The Chamber of Commerce was at the meeting and has publically voiced comments in relation to the issue of shop closures in the city centre - both on Radio Foyle and in the local print media.
In terms of who pays us, our members pay us, not the government and not the ratepayer - our members. If you are one of our members, you will know that all you have to do is lift the phone.
On the issue of the empty shops the Chamber has been very clear in our position. The City Centre is the jewel in our economic crown and we are working with City Centre Initiative and Derry City Council and ILEX trying to find ways in which we can improve things. You are right about supporting City Centre Initiative. However in relation to Peter's comments, much of what he said was true. Market forces drove his business downturn. He was also right about the effect negative publicity can have on this city. Lets focus on what we want and work together to get it.
