Hello,
I am writing to suggest a novel idea that would promote one of the most important growth sectors for Derry now and in the nearest future – the tourism sector. I think an amusement park should be built, something similar to Alton Towers in England, with dedicated restaurants and perhaps an hotel. The advantage to such a scheme is that it could be funded completely with private money unlike so many of the other proposed schemes for the Derry area that seem reliant on public money. The reason why I think this should work is because there is currently no such facility on the island and thus Derry could take the lead here.
A riverside location would be ideal, although according to Ilex the Fort George site plans are already beyond the committed stage and so perhaps a site further along, closer to the Foyle bridge, might be suitable? A lot can be done with a relatively small area and rides could even be built out onto the water. Similar parks exist in Scandinavia (where I lived for 15 years) such as Gröna Lund in Stockholm, Liseberg in Gothenburg or Tivoli in Copenhagen.
Looking forward to the Big Derry Dipper and the Londonderry Tunnel Of Love!
All the best / John & Antoinette Herron

Great idea. I wish I had the capital - something like that would make an absolute fortune and greatly boost tourism in Derry. You're absolutely right. Ireland has nothing like it. Wouldn't it be brilliant to be able to say that Derry has got a great entertainment park. What do we have now? "Barry's". Same old rides, and spend loads of money in a very quick time.
